CLOSED CIRCUIT - Rebreather

The Inspiration Closed Circuit Rebreather

The Inspiration Closed Circuit Rebreather is the first CE approved closed circuit breathing system: approved to 50 metres (40 metres recommended) with Air as the diluent gas and 100 metres with Heliox.

The Inspiration's oxygen controller automatically maintains a constant partial pressure of oxygen (ppO2) which gives an optimum breathing mixture at all depths. That is, it delivers an oxygen-rich mix throughout the dive and a super-oxygen-rich mix during decompression, resulting in significantly reduced deco obligations on every dive.

With the benefits of dramatically increased No-Stop times and outstanding gas duration, perfect buoyancy control, warmer, quieter diving and no bubbles to frighten off wildlife - the Inspiration Closed Circuit rebreather is changing the way we dive, bringing a whole new experience to sport and commercial divers alike.

Module 1 - Air Diluent

This is the TDI course for anybody considering diving the Inspiration closed circuit rebreather. It introduces open circuit divers to the theory, skills and procedures required to safely dive the Inspiration to 40 metres using an air diluent for minimal decompression diving.

COURSE PRE-REQUISITE

The pre-requisite certification level for this course is:
  • Minimum age 18
  • Verified log of 70 dives
  • TDI Advanced Nitrox - May be included with course if necessary

COURSE STRUCTURE

Classroom theory tuition 8 hours
This may be adjusted to suit students requiring additional tuition to meet the course entry requirements. It will cover:
  • History & Evolution of Rebreathers
  • Comparison of Open Circuit, Closed Circuit & Semi Closed Circuit Rebreather systems & the benefits/problems of each.
  • Practical Mechanics of the system.
  • Gas Physiology
  • Electronic Systems Design & Maintenance.
  • Dive Tables.
  • Dive Computers.
  • Dive Planning.
Confined water (pool) training 2 hours
Fundamentals of buoyancy control and familiarisation with the unit are the foundation of the confined water training.

Open water training & experience 6 hours
Consisting of instructor accompanied dives to familiarise the student with descents, ascents and buoyancy in deeper water, including practice of the following safety drills:
  • Open Circuit Bailout
  • Mouthpiece Drills
  • Solenoid Failures
  • Oxygen Cell Verification Drills
  • DSMB Deployment
The course may be scheduled to suit the student, either over 5 consecutive days or with individual training sessions arranged at mutually convenient times. Open water dives will be conducted at a suitable inland site. Ocean dives may be arranged either in the UK or as part of a foreign trip if desired. Additional charges will apply.

COST

5 day course £ 550.00
Inspiration Closed Circuit Rebreather - fully rigged £ 4090.00

It is our belief that this course can only be taught from an experience base and as such is very dependent on in-water time and practice. With this in mind, students should establish the experience of any potential choice of instructor, together with how often and how recently they have dived their Inspiration.
No other piece of diving equipment needs to be used more than a Closed Circuit Rebreather. Regular use to maintain skills is a necessary part of CCR diving and we will therefore not certify a student that does not own a unit.

Module 2 - Mixed Gas Diluent

This course is for the experienced rebreather diver wanting to take the Inspiration deeper than 40 metres, using mixed gas as a diluent to counter the effects of nitrogen narcosis and oxygen toxicity at depth.

COURSE PRE-REQUISITE

The pre-requisite certification level for this course is:
  • Minimum age 18
  • Verified log of 100 rebreather hours over a minimum of 100 dives on the Inspiration, Fifty percent of dives to be deeper than 20 metres & all dives to be deeper than 6 metres.
  • TDI Trimix Diver or equivalent - May be included with course if necessary.
  • TDI Rebreather Diver or equivalent

COURSE STRUCTURE

Classroom theory tuition 8 hours
This may be adjusted to suit students requiring additional tuition to meet the course entry requirements. It will cover:
  • Gas Physiology
  • Formula Work
  • Dive Tables
  • Dive Computers
  • Dive Planning
  • Equipment Maintenance
Open water training & assessment 6 dives
Required skills include:
  • Verify diluent & oxygen cylinder contents using oxygen analyser where appropriate.
  • Demonstrate correct pre dive planning procedures.
  • Properly execute a recovery from a system failure & conclude the dive & decompression on open circuit gases carried.
  • Gas shutdowns & loss of gas.
  • Broken hoses.
  • Flooded absorbent canister.
  • Oxygen rebreather mode at less than 6 metre stops.
  • Use of BC/suit for buoyancy control.
  • Pre dive checks.
  • Deployment of delayed SMB at depth & mid water.
  • Remove & replace stage cylinders underwater.
  • Stop at 3-5 metres on descent for leak bubble check & diluent flush.
  • Electronics systems monitoring for PPO2 levels.
  • Proper execution of the dive within all pre-determined dive limits.
  • Demonstration of decompression stops at pre-determined depths.
  • Post dive clean of unit to avoid contamination & spread of disease.

INSPIRATION REBREATHER OPERATION

Gas flow through the Inspiration
Until now closed circuit diving has been the exclusive preserve of specialist Military divers - with units manufactured only in limited numbers at considerable cost. The Inspiration breaks from this tradition, being the first affordable, commercially produced, fully closed circuit system - manufactured with the same production control, build quality and professional finish that distinguish all BUDDY products.
What is a fully closed circuit system? Put simply, conventional diving, or SCUBA, is an Open Circuit system whereby gas is taken in via a demand valve and then exhaled into the surrounding water, wasting a large proportion of every breath. In contrast, the Inspiration is a Fully Closed Circuit system in which all of the exhaled breath is retained within a closed loop, filtered and refreshed and then recycled back to the diver for further use. Only during the ascent and mask clearing are bubbles emitted.
Gas flow through the Inspiration
The Closed Circuit
A Exhaled breath leaves the diver's lungs and is directed into the Inspiration's Exhale Counterlung.
B It then travels via a series of water-traps, over the right shoulder into the Sofnolime "scrubber" unit (3) which filters out all trace of carbon dioxide waste - effectively scrubbing "clean" the breathing mix ready for re-use.
C The Inspiration then measures the oxygen content(pp02) of this mix with three specially developed independent sensors and adds oxygen from the on-board 3 litre cylinder (1) to keep the pp02 up at the target level or Setpoint.
D Suitably scrubbed and refreshed, this breathing gas returns via the left shoulder and the Inhale Counterlung ready for use in the next breath.
